  • To further enhance students’ ability of academic research and communication, we hold the International Master Class in Phenomenology this summer. The Master class was organized jointly by the School of Philosophy at ZJU, and the Center for Subjectivity Research at the University of Copenhagen, from July 1st to July 19th. Prof. Dan Zahavi, the director of the Center for Subjectivity Research, as well as a world-renowned scholar in phenomenology and Husserl studies, was invited to give eight talks on Husserl’s phenomenology. During the course, Prof. Zahavi discussed several important topics such as perception, embodiment, selfhood, empathy, and the lifeworld. This summer school is also available for students and faculty members outside ZJU. Over 50 participants attended this summer school. These students come from UCL, the University of British Columbia, Sun Yat-sen University, and other institutions.To encourage in-depth studies in Husserl’s phenomenology, we hold a workshop after the talk. For these students who intend to participate in this workshop, they are required to report on the selection of topics on Aug 17th and then submit an essay in English. Among the over ten submitted drafts, five essays were chosen and presented in the workshop on Sep 19th where Prof. Zahavi attended and gave comments.

  • Bao Yugang Chair Professor is sponsored by Zhejiang University Bao Yugang International Fund. This position is open for competent scholars from renowned foreign universities or research institutions. In this round of recruitment, three candidates stand out, one of whom is professor Leendert van der Torre from the University of Luxembourg, recommended by the School of Philosophy of Zhejiang University. He majors in logic, and shares close academic partnership with Professor Liao Beishui from the School of Philosophy, Zhejiang University.Prof. Leendert van der Torre, born in the Netherlands in March 1968, is currently professor and doctoral supervisor at the University of Luxembourg, serving as head of the University of Luxembourg's Individual and Collective Reasoning Research Team and the Robotics Laboratory of the Luxembourg University. In the meanwhile, he is also the president of the International Association for Computational Logic, chairman of the Steering Committee of the International Deontic Logic and Specification System, EurAI fellow of the European Federation for Artificial Intelligence, principal investigator of the EU Horizon 2020 Project, associate editor of Journal of Logic and Computation (Oxford University Press) , editor of Logic Journal of the IGPL, Journal of Applied Logic, chief editor of Handbook for deontic logic, normative system and normative multi-agent system.The cooperation between research teams led by Prof. Leendert van der Torre and Prof. Liao Beishui started in 2012. Over the years, fruitful results have been achieved in research, education and international academic services. In 2021, the Zhejiang University-University of Luxembourg Joint Lab on Advanced Intelligent Systems and Reasoning (ZLAIRE) was inaugurated, with Prof. Liao Bishui nominated as the Chinese director and Prof. Leendert van der Torre as the foreign director.The position of Bao Yugang Chair Professor is not merely an honored title, but more importantly, with the contribution of Prof. Leendert van der Torre’s team, it will play a positive role in the development of the Zhejiang University-University of Luxembourg Joint Lab on Advanced Intelligent Systems and Reasoning, implementation of Double First-Class Initiative in Zhejiang University characterized by multidisciplinary integration, and expansion of global influence of Zhejiang University’s logic and other related disciplines. Related News:/eng/2022/0103/c64632a2467585/page.htm

  • On December 6,the inauguration ceremony of Zhejiang University - University of Luxembourg Joint Lab on Advanced Intelligent Systems and REasoning (ZLAIRE) was successfully held online. The event brought together over 30 delegates from both countries.H.E. YANG Xiaorong, Ambassador of China in Luxembourg, praised the positive role of ZLAIRE in her opening remarks, “The joint lab will provide a brand-new platform for both countries to cooperate in interdisciplinary research and teaching, integrate resources for sci-tech innovations, and nurture high-caliber innovators.”Other speakers at the ceremony were: H.E. Vincent Hieff, Consul General of Luxembourg in Shanghai; Prof. Stéphane Pallage, Rector of the University of Luxembourg; Prof. HE Lianzhen, ZJU's Vice President; Prof. HUANG Huaxin, Dean of ZJU's Faculty of Arts and Humanities; Prof. Jean-Marc Schlenker, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of Luxembourg. The inauguration ceremony was moderated by Prof. LI Min, Director of ZJU’s Office of Global Engagement.Prof. LIAO Beishui, Co-director of ZLAIRE and professor from ZJU's School of Philosophy, hosted the following kick-off meeting and introduced ZLAIRE’s mission, vision and research directions. Scholars from various schools and departments including law, computer science, mathematics, physics and materials, control science and engineering, as well as life sciences and medicine presented both universities’ strengths and explored directions for future collaboration. An invited speech was given by Prof. Christoph Benzmüller, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Free University of Berlin. He shared his research on advanced intelligent systems.Next year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Luxembourg.With the MoU and student exchange agreement signed this May and the launch of ZLAIRE, Zhejiang University and the University of Luxembourg will further join hands to give full play to their interdisciplinary advantages, and contribute to China-Luxembourg and China-Europe people-to-people exchanges.

  • General informationThe School of Philosophy at Zhejiang University seeks to hire one tenure-track faculty member in Logic through its highly competitive and well-funded New Hundred Talents Program. The position is at the level comparable to a US assistant professorship or UK lectureship and is called ZJU100 Young Professor. Exact start date is flexible but ideally should be in Fall 2023 depending on availability. Applicants must demonstrate excellent research record and teaching competence in logic or related areas. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research profile can complement the strengths of our current logic program, especially in the areas of epistemic logic, knowledge representation and reasoning, and logic in AI. The teaching expectation is roughly 3 courses per academic year. Other responsibilities include thesis supervision at the master's or doctoral level, as well as departmental and university service and organization of research workshops and conferences.
